To all of Jim's family,
So sorry for your loss. Jim and I crossed paths many times during our time in the navy. He was always a true professional, a proud Newfoundlander and a consummate gentleman. Our last meeting was a few years ago at a fellow shipmate's funeral where he presented me with a cherished Forget-me-not pin.
Please accept my deepest condolences and sincere sympathy. Also, know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time.
Fair winds and following seas, and may you rest in peace my friend.

I first met Jim better known to me at the time as Chief on our way to meet the Margaree in Victoria. The one memory that I have was, we were on the ferry between Vancouver and Victoria and we went to the restaurant for lunch and we were both served roast beef dinner. Jim called the server over and informed him that he was not a cannibal but a Newfoundlander. Jim treated all who worked for him with respect and fairness. I will miss him as a friend and fellow shipmate. My condolences to the family.

I will always remember getting the letter from Jim asking if knew the significance to Newfoundland of the Forget Me Not flower and would I consider writing a song to commemorate it. That began our friendship that I will always cherish. In my comments at the Honorary Degree ceremony in 2012 I told the story not knowing Jim was in the audience. What a beautiful surprise to see Jim and Gloria there. It was more meaningful than the degree. I wish we could be with his family to share your grief and celebrate the life of this wonderful man and proud Newfoundland patriot. Fly with the angels Jim wearing your forget me not which you hold dear.

Although I never sailed with Jimmy Johnson I knew him in the Navy as a well respected Chief Engineer. His reputation was #1. Over the years often talked with him at the Kootenay Memorials and last seen him at the 2019 event before COVID. He also supplied me with his Kootenay Commissioning Book for the Museum. Even after all these years when ever I met him I always called him "Chief". He smiled. RIP Chief Jimmy. You will not be forgotten.

Back in our younger days, Jim was known as Mr. Johnson to us kids in the neighbourhood of Guildwood Cres.
You had a different level of respect for Mr. Johnson, knowing he was in the navy and I always admired seeing him in his uniforms.
His love of Newfoundland was proudly displayed on his basement floor with a painted province, and I can recall that we were scared to walk on it….lol
My deepest condolences to all the family, and cherish the memories.
Terry Richardson,
